2020年6月に mstdn.jp は運営者である DSNO によって運営停止が決定された。mstdn.jp は2017年の日本の Mastodon ブームを牽引した大規模 Mastodon サーバーの1つである。運営母体は DSNO までに数回変更されている。DSNO による運営停止の発表後、もし運営を引き継ぐに値する企業が名乗りを挙げた場合に運営を譲渡すると DSNO は声明を出した。最終的に7月から Sujitech が mstdn.jp の運営を引き継ぐことになった。Sujitech はアメリカの企業であり、Suji Yan 氏が創業者である。Sujitech は有名なサードパーティの Twitter クライアント Twidere のスポンサーである。Twidere は Mastodon にも対応している。氏は Dimension という会社の創業者でもあり、この会社は Mask Network（Maskbook から改名）というプロジェクトを作っている。先日200万ドルの資金調達が完了したことは喜ばしいニュースだ。

Mask Network は個人的に面白いプロジェクトだと注目している。Facebook と Twitter 上で Mask Network を使って暗号化された文章を投稿することができる。この投稿は Mask Network をインストールしていてかつ復号の権利がある場合にしか受け手は復号できない。外部からみるとただの謎の文字列である。他に Twitter のページから離れることなく暗号通貨のやりとりをすることができる。詳しくは Mask Network（Maskbook）の紹介 ― インターネットの未来 | ALIS から知ることができる。

Sujitech が運営を引き継ぐにあたって、IT ジャーナリストの 三上洋 氏がオンラインでインタビューをする機会を得た。英語ができてITmediaで「マストドンつまみ食い日記」を執筆している mazzo 氏がインタビューの聞き手として参加した。Suji 氏のパートナーで、法務に詳しい kattgu7 氏も参加した。この4人でインタビューは行われた。インタビューのアーカイブは マストドンjp新運営スージーヤン氏インタビュー である。

このインタビューをまとめた記事がメディアから出ると思っていたが、出ていない。Sujitechへのインタビューについての私的なメモ #jpsuji｜blank71 に個人的な雑記がある。

英語と日本語の混じったインタビューを書き起こして記事にするのは大変困難であったため、オンラインインタビューでの内容を参考として自分が新たにインタビューをした。

以下が質問と回答である。英語が実際のやりとりで、日本語は私が訳したものである。

01. What is the purpose that you decided to be a maintainer of mstdn.jp/mastodon.cloud?

In the early days of Fediverse / Mastodon I already know the cool concept. Also noticed the launch of Nico.friends and Pawoo - talked with Pawoo and several Pixiv members since 2016. I understand the decision to shut them down as a business but there’re huge potentials underestimated. When I heard Mstdn.jp and Mastodon.cloud is considering closing down I contact them directly to keep the maintenance.

So for pixiv my connection start from 2016 when I was still in U of Tokyo. Later in 2017’s IVS, talked with Mr. Ito (he’s ceo of Pixiv that time). I have more conversations with other Pixiv members afterwards including employee responsible for Pawoo. Later during the cryptocurrency bubble (late 2017/early 2018) I also talked to the current executive about Pawoo, Mastodon and the future of decentralized network.

01. あなたはなぜ mstdn.jp/mastodon.cloud の運営者になろうと思ったのですか。

Fediverse/Mastodon の初期の頃、私はすでにクールなコンセプトを知っていました。friends.nico と Pawoo の立ち上げにも気づきました。2016年以降、PawooといくつかのPixivメンバーと話しました。ビジネスとしてそれらを閉鎖する決定を私は理解しましたが、大きな可能性が過小評価されています。 mstdn.jp と mastodon.cloud が閉鎖を検討していると聞いたとき、運営を維持するために直接連絡しました。

Pixiv とは私が東京大学に在籍していた2016年から繋がりがあります。 2017年後半に IVS（Infinity Ventures Summit）で伊藤浩樹氏（当時の Pixiv の最高経営責任者）と話しました。 その後、Pawoo の責任者を含む他の Pixiv メンバーとの更に交流がありました。後に暗号通貨バブル（2017年後半/ 2018年初頭）のときに、Pawoo、Mastodon、および分散型ネットワークの将来について現在の幹部とも話しました。

02. Since Sujitech started maintaining mstdn.jp, it was down several times by VPS because of terrorism intended post, child porn post etc. What do you think of it?

It’s actually very interesting that some users will try to post malicious contents during the first several weeks of the transaction. During that time we are also negotiating with several VPS providers to find the most reasonable one (regulation and price). It will not like to happen again recently unless we have a huge user base growth etc. we also always have back up plan for our VPS /cloud provider and even other solutions(methods used by Proton Mail). These will be unnecessary for Mstdn.jp and Mastodon.cloud now.

02. Sujitech は mstdn.jp のメンテナンスを開始した当初、テロを意図した投稿、児童ポルノの投稿などにより、VPSによって数回ダウンしました。これについてどう思いますか？

実際に非常に興味深いのは、トランザクションの最初の数週間に一部のユーザーが悪意のあるコンテンツを投稿しようとすることです。 当時、いくつかのVPSプロバイダーと交渉して、最も妥当なもの（レギュレーションと価格）を見つけました。 ユーザーベースが大幅に増加しない限り、最近のように再び発生することはありません。私たちには常に、VPS/クラウドプロバイダーや他のソリューション（Proton Mailで使用されている手法）によるバックアップの計画がありますが、現状の mstdn.jp と mastodon.cloud では必要ないでしょう。

03. What kind of posts are allowed or should be avoided.

As we said before we want to make sure the users have freedom while be responsible for the community. Malicious posts such as real world child porn and terrorism will be banned. In the end I hope the community (or in other word, cyberian ) of Mstdn.jp and governance the community by themselves through a democratic process. However this is not viable now due to many management and technology limitations.

03. どのような投稿が許可され、どのような投稿が避けられるべきですか。

以前お伝えしたように、私たちはユーザーがコミュニティに責任を持ちながら自由であることを確実にしたいと思っています。 現実世界の児童ポルノやテロなどの悪意のある投稿は禁止されます。 結局のところ、私は mstdn.jp のコミュニティ（もしくはサイバー主義者）が民主的なプロセスを通じてコミュニティを自治することを望んでいます。 しかしながら、これは多くの管理と技術の制限のために現状では実現できません。

04. Sujitech is a maintainer of Twidere, Twitter and Mastodon mobile client. Can you give me an introduction of Twidere?

Twidere start as a client for Twitter & twitter like social network years ago, including Mastodon/Fediverse. It got half million download on Google play alone. We will release a new beta version Twidere X for Twitter V2 API and iOS beta testing

04. Sujitech は Twitter と Mastodon のモバイルクライアントである Twidere のメンテナーです。Twidere について紹介してください。

Twidere は Twitter と Mastodon/Fediverse を含む Twitter ライクな SNS のクライアントとして数年前からスタートしました。Google Play だけで50万回ダウンロードされています。私たちは Twitter V2 API と iOS beta テストのための新しいベータ版の「Twidere X」をリリースする予定です。

05. Also Twidere is an open source project. Is there anything contribution that you want to call Fediverse people?

Yes. For now if you're developer pls wait for https://github.com/TwidereProject/Twidere-Android/issues/1388 -> we will open sourced the beta TwidereX soon so you can work on it. For non-devs if you want to contribute https://www.patreon.com/twidere :)

05. そして Twidere はオープンソースのプロジェクトです。Fediverse の人々に呼びかけたい貢献してもらいたいことはありますか？

06. You are a foundation of Dimension and it is developing Maskbook. Maskbook is awesome and interesting project. Can you give me an introduction of Maskbook?

For Maskbook / Mask.io there're several interviews in English already. 06. あなたは Dimension の創始者であり、Dimension は Maskbook を開発しています。Maskbook は素晴らしく、そして面白いプロジェクトです。Maskbook について紹介してください。

07. Maskbook can use on Facebook and Twitter. Is there any plans to enable at Mastodon or mstdn.jp/mastodn.cloud?

Yes; we also give @syuilo a part-time $$ to see what we can do together on fediverse.

07. Maskbook は Facebook とTwitter 上で使うことができます。Mastodon や mstdn.jp/mastodon.cloud で Maskbook を使うことができるようにする計画はありますか。

はい。またその計画に加えて、私たちが Fediverse で何ができるかを模索するために syuillo にパートタイムの形として有償で協力してもらっています。

補足: syuillo 氏は Fediverse のプロジェクトの1つである Misskey の開発者。

08. You said that you will make Patreon account to receive donations as like Twidere. However, recently Patreon is warning some illustrators who activate on Twitter, Pawoo, Pixiv to delete the contents because they think the contents are child porn. If they avoid the warning and not delete it, Patreon says they will delete their Patreon accounts. I don't think this should not be related to mstdn.jp/mastodon.cloud and your maintaining policy. What do you think about this problem? Use another service?

I know this problem since early days from both creators and our contacts at Pixiv. This is so call locked-in of a platform- user get benefit first and then the platform will lock u in to form a typical platform capitalism ecosystem, and let the early investor and founders will likely happily cash out through an IPO :). The action of Patreon is a typical this type of behavior and an unfair competition, and Pixiv should take legal action if necessary. However from my understanding usually Japanese company or entrepreneur will not use law and politics as a weapon to defense their right. (maybe Masa Son's one of the few exception). From another perspective (more technical), thats one of the reason why decentralized web is important, since in a decentralized web users can chose to migrate their social graph away to any platform easily --> no locked in exists . You own your own data

08. あなたは Twidere のように Patreon にアカウントを作って寄付を受け付けると言っていました。しかしながら近頃、Twitter・Pawoo・Pixiv などで活動するイラストレーターたちが、彼らのコンテンツが児童ポルノに該当するとして Patreon から警告されました。もし彼らがこの警告を避けたりコンテンツを消さなかった場合は、彼らのアカウントを消去すると Patreon は言っています。この事は mstdn.jp/mastodon.cloud と運営ポリシーに無関係ではないように感じます。この問題についてあなたはどのように思いますか？他のサービスを使いますか？

私たちが Pixiv と交流したときとクリエイターたちの両方から、この問題は初期から知っていました。これはプラットフォームの「ロックイン」と呼ばれます。ユーザーがまず利益を得てから、プラットフォームがロックインすることで典型的なプラットフォーム資本主義エコシステムを形成します。そして初期の投資家と創始者は IPO を通して喜んで換金しようとします。Patreon の活動は、この種の典型的な行動であり、不公平な競争です。Pixiv は必要に応じて法的処置を取るべきです。しかし私の理解では、通常、日本の企業や起業家は自分の権利を守るための武器として法律や政治を利用しようとしません。（おそらく孫正義は数少ない例外の1つでしょう）。より技術的で別の観点から、それが分散型 Web が重要である理由の1つです。分散型 Web のユーザーはロックインなしに、ソーシャルグラフを任意のプラットフォームに簡単に移行することを選択できます。あなたはあなた自身のデーターを所有しています。

彼らは Mask Network で忙しく、mstdn.jp/mastodon.cloud に大きくリソースを割ける余裕はなさそうである。だが、mstdn.jp が消えずに存続していることは大きな可能性である。彼らがどのような影響を Fediverse に与えるのか見守っていきたい。先日、Suji Yan 氏から Mastodon の DevOps を担当し、実験的機能を試したり統合するのを手助けしてくれるパートタイムスタッフを雇いたいという声明があった。

Sujitech は数か月前から Mastodon のスポンサーであり、Sponsors of Mastodon にはロゴが掲載されている。Suji Yan 氏は「私たちは、インターネットのより良いバージョンを形作るために、Fediverse および分散型 Web をサポートし続けます。」と言っている。2020 年 12 月より Sujitech に代わり Mask Network がスポンサーになっている。

12/18 に Sujitech は mstdn.jp のメンテナンス及びアップデートを実施した。約1年ぶりのアップデートであり、バージョンは 3.0.1 から 3.2.1 になった。Sujitech が同じくメンテナーを務める mastodon.cloud については12月末にメンテナンス及びアップデート実施すると予告している。

12/28 に mstdn.jp のバージョンが 3.2.2 になっているのが発見される。3.2.2 は 12/19 にリリースされたもので、セキュリティフィックスなどを含んだバックポートのリリースである。12/19 には同時に 3.3.0rc2 がリリースされている。12/27 に 3.3.0 の正式リリースがなされる。
